Published: 12/22/2021

There are many Christmas traditions that we look forward to each year, from family gatherings to delicious foods, shiny decorations, and surprise gifts underneath the tree. But one of our favorite things to do is cuddle up on the couch with a cozy blanket and a cup of hot cocoa to watch a Christmas movie. Although they’re known for being cheesy, romantic, and wonderfully sweet, there’s a Christmas movie for everyone looking to get into a festive mood and unwind in a relaxing way.

Here are some of the best Christmas movies to watch this year and some ideas for how you can enjoy even more festive flicks with a little professional help.

1. Miracle on 34th StreetHappy couple and their teenage daughter and elementary age son watch a Christmas movie together during the Christmas season. The girl is holding a bowl of popcorn and the remote control. They are all smiling while watching the movie. A Christmas tree, stockings and a fireplace are in the background.

There are countless Christmas movies available to watch, but few more classic or nostalgic than Miracle on 34th Street. This 1947 hit movie stars Natalie Wood in post-World War II New York and features the real Santa Claus who becomes a Macy’s store Santa for and proves to everyone that he is real despite the skepticism.

2. A Christmas Story

Another classic Christmas movie that is worth watching year after year is A Christmas Story, which dates back to 1983 and is typically played on repeat on at least one TV channel during the holidays. This movie features little Ralphie who wants a Red Ryder BB gun more than anything else for Christmas and gets up to many laughable shenanigans.

3. Home Alone

The 1990 movie, Home Alone, is a fun movie to watch with the whole family. It explores the question of what you might do if you were a kid and got left behind at Christmas when your whole family went on vacation. Two burglars played by Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci would have never expected what the young Macaulay Culkin had in store for them!

4. Elf

Will Ferrell is absolutely hilarious in the Christmas movie, Elf, which is a 2003 flick. Ferrell grew up among elves at the North Pole and travels to New York later as an adult to find his father. It’s a funny and touching story with lots of laughs along the way.

5. Love Hard

If you’re looking for a newer holiday movie, check out Love Hard, which is a romantic comedy that periodically references the ongoing debate of whether Die Hard is actually a Christmas movie while also exploring the modern world of online dating. Available on Netflix, this 2021 movie features a Los Angeles journalist who meets a dreamy guy on a dating app, only to discover he’s not who he says he is. Her search for love takes her across the country at Christmas to discover what she’s really been looking for.
